Take Today - Visions EP

Take Today are a Glasgow five piece alternative rock/heavy rock band, they are Paul Daly (vocals), Neil Parkinson (guitar/vocals), Cameron Wilson (guitar), Ki Cairney (bass/vocals) and Scott Craig (drums).

In just over a year Take Today have soared onto the scene following Fireball’s Hottest Band final which earned them a support with Flogging Molly. This was to be the catalyst that changed the band forever, bringing in a new line-up and immediately securing a support with Sleeping With Sirens and more recently Dream State.

Their impact has been such that KERRANG said they are:

Arena rockers in the waiting

Their most recent single Lifeline was named Track of the Week on Jim Gellatly’s Amazing Radio show, and their new EP Visions was released on 3 April and has been highly anticipated following the release of lead track Freefall.

The opening track on Visions is Divide it starts with a static buzz, before guitar riff and drums kick in at a breakneck speed, which then slows to allow the vocals to be introduced, before it speeds up again. It plays between the two pace format of the track until the final minute when it introduces a heavier bass and an almost demonic vocal before reverting to a huge guitar hook to finish.

Release Us is another song focussing on a more nu metal approach going for that gruff vocal until the chorus which has much more of an heavy rock feel and a much stronger vocal.

Next is the previously released Freefall this starts in with drums and guitars, providing the rhythm for the song, with a heavy bass adding an edge to it, it provides a more distinguishable melody for the vocalist, before a furious finish to the song when the vocal becomes screamed.

We finish with Glass Heart which starts off with a softer sound and really allows Daly’s vocal to flourish, showing that he has a real strength in delivering a rock vocal, as we approach the final few minutes we then switch to a more gruff demonic vocal, before the song mellows out to a simple drum beat and catchy guitar riff and a very catchy singalong lyric. This is my favourite track of the EP.

Personally this is a tale of two stories for me I loved the tracks when they were focused on the guitar riffs and a strong rock vocal, the songs lost a bit of appeal when they took the nu metal/rap approach as the lyric became too harsh for my taste.

Overall it is an ambitious EP mixing different genres within tracks, it will translate well to a live set and has the potential to carry a large arena crowd.
