Kevin P. Gilday & The Glasgow Cross - A Sensitive Man

Kevin P. Gilday & The Glasgow Cross is a collaboration between award winning poet Kevin P. Gilday (Sonnet Youth, NTS, BBC) and multi-instrumentalist Ralph Hector (The Paperback Throne, Pelts, Iffy Folk Records). The Glaswegian two-piece have combined contemporary spoken word with adynamic palette of aural textures to create a unique sound.

Kevin P. Gilday is one of the county’s most recognisable and successful spoken word artists. Co-founder of Sonnet Youth, and with 4 published titles under his belt, Kevin has toured his poetry around the world - from Hollywood to East Kilbride -including major festivals (BBC 6Music Festival, Glastonbury), Fringes (Edinburgh, Toronto, Vancouver) as well as large scale tours of the UK, Ireland, Germany, Canada and the US.

A genetic scientist by day, Ralph Hector has amassed an impressive body of work throughout his various musical projects. Through his work with The Paperback Throne, Pelts, Syvdoh, The Sea Kings and Heirloom, Ralph has become one of the most sought after collaborators in Scottish music – with a legacy of lo-fi hits stretching back over a decade. As founder of Iffy Folk Records, Ralph is entrenched in the Scottish grassroots music scene, releasing inspiring music ignored by the mainstream and bringing focus to overlooked artists.

Their music strides confidently between propulsive post-punk, off beat electro and epic arrangements, all oscillating on the singular delivery of Kevin P. Gilday’s spoken word compositions and powerful vocals.

Lyrically inspired by the city of Glasgow, Gilday takes confessional sojourns into grief, toxic masculinity and the precarious nature of modern life – all imbued with his trademark dark wit.

Their latest single A Sensitive Man was released on 27 March and after hearing it I have to say it is absolutely one of my favourite tracks of the year.

It starts off with a psychedelic synth, then a steady drum beat, before a guitar hook kicks in to propel the song from start to finish, we then get Gilday’s spoken word lyric and as a renowned exponent of the genre they are nailed spot on. I particularly loved the lyrics ‘I’m a weak man, couldn’t find robust in the dictionary, go for a night out wake up dying of dysentery, this body is a vessel, unfortunately it’s the Mary Celeste”.

It also has a wonderfully catch chorus “I’m a sensitive man, I’m a sensitive, I’m a sensitive man, what’s to do

This song is a real gem, excellent musicianship from Hector and fabulous witty lyrics from Gilday, turn this into a fantastic portrayal of anti lad culture.

This tune deserves a lot of airplay and should be helped by the guys being named as Scotland on Sunday’s artist of the week in edition published 5 April. The article can be read below:
