Lemon Drink - Patsy Kensit
It’s been a while since I reviewed Demon Child but it’s great that Glasgow’s indie‑pop‑rock firebrands Lemon Drink are back.
Formed in 2018 over a shared love of angry girl anthems, sweaty basement gigs and amaretto sours, Lemon Drink quickly carved out a name for themselves with energetic and vivacious live shows. This led them to support slots with Carla J. Easton, Cloth, Lazy Day, Our Girl and Poster Paints, but also gave them the opportunity to headline Glasgow’s iconic King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut.
Their debut EP Better Run earned spins on BBC Radio Scotland, Amazing Radio and RAPAL (Track of the Week), while their follow up single Demon Child secured Spotify playlisting and broadened their audience. I’d like to think this was also down to my review lol.
They return with new single Patsy Kensit, a shimmering, dream distortion anthem dripping in nostalgia, attitude and their trademark razor sharp wit.
Despite a long five year wait since Demon Child the new track marks a bold and assured step forward for the four‑piece, more expansive, more confident, but still unmistakably Lemon Drink.
It was recorded, mixed and co‑produced by Andy Monaghan (Frightened Rabbit) and the cover artwork was designed by the bands own Lauren Peters.
Patsy Kensit captures the band at their most self‑assured to date. It offers a vivid snapshot of their evolving sound, amplifying the playful edge, biting humour and lyrical precision that have cemented their reputation as one of Scotland’s most exciting independent emerging acts.
The single itself was a long time in coming with its earliest lyrics written in 2018 by vocalist Sophie Bartholomew and guitarist Kirstie “KC” Cunningham. It was inspired by a night spent laughing at Sophie’s mum’s ex‑boyfriend’s chaotic Twitter feed. Lines like “you say you’re tired like Patsy Kensit/say your neighbour is a star, make sure everybody knows it” were sparked by his habit of retweeting out of context selfies of Patsy Kensit and bragging about living next door to Judy Murray.
Those scribbles waited until right moment and now with a fully formed lineup and a more mature sonic identity, Lemon Drink have built Patsy Kensit around them. The result is a soaring, cathartic anthem laced with biting humour and emotional fire, a song for anyone who has endured the company of entitled and painfully boring men (sorry guys!).
Patsy Kensit showcases everything that makes Lemon Drink tick. Distortion and vulnerability, defiant charm and deadpan humour. It’s peppered with the kind of playfully droll one‑liners the band have become known for “you only drink champagne, but prosecco’s just the same” while showcasing a clear progression in their sound.
Patsy Kensit sees the instrumentation more refined, the arrangement tighter, and the overall feel more dynamic and deliberate but keeps their raw spark intact.
It’s great to have them back and recording new music and it’s hopefully onwards and upwards for Lemon Drink, a band who write catchy tunes full of acerbic humour and who always leave a smile on your face when listening to their tunes.
