Children of the State - Hot Money

Now settled in Manchester, Children of the State reemerge from the chaos of 2020 stronger than ever with newly gained fans in the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Radio X’s John Kennedy as well as DIY Magazine, So Young Magazine, Shindig! Magazine, Fred Perry Subculture, Metro & plenty more.

Made up of John McCullagh, Nathan Keeble, Corey Clifton, Conor O’Reilly and Harry Eland, the band’s blend of 70’s glam rock, 60’s nostalgia and electronica influences have landed them festival slots at the likes of Tramlines, Circafest and YANA Festival as well as support slots with Temples, The Mysterines and Elephant Stone and a riotous sold out headline show at their native The Leadmill in Yorkshire.

Following the success of Big Sur earlier this year, Children of the State have teamed up with The Coral’s Ian Skelly once again on new single Hot Money, the first offering from their forthcoming EP, the ingeniously titled Tragic Carpet and the Magical Wasp Gang from Notre Dame.

Hot Money was released yesterday, Friday 16 October and it’s an absolute banger. The track comes straight at you from the off, attacking you with it’s heavy stomping guitars, it has a real throwback glam rock vibe tinged if possible with a touch of US West Coast grunge.

The song is a very thinly veiled blast at capitalism and the world crashing around it as echoed in my favourite verse when they sing “the earth is burning brighter than a candle in the dark, the end of time is now so let me make my mark, I want it hard and dirty as slums upon the Thames, I wanna turn you on while the whole world is up in flames”.

Hot Money is a real breath of fresh air, with it’s contrast between the joyous tones of glam rock and the more sombre grunge, it really is a pleasure on the ears and is a song I did not want to finish.

Children of the State are a band that continue to innovate and I can’t wait to hear the new EP, just don’t expect me to type it’s name again !!!
