Skylights - Darkness Falls

York based anthemic rock’n’rollers Skylights release their second physical single Darkness Falls today, Friday 23 October.

Skylights are Rob Scarisbrick (vocals), Turnbull Smith (guitar), Jonny Scarisbrick (bass) and Myles Soley (drums).

Their debut physical single Enemies hit number 2 in the UK Physical Singles Chart in June, held back from the top spot only by Fontaines DC.

Skylights have fast built a reputation as a ‘band of the people’ through live shows, an appearance on SOCCER AM and relentless interaction with a  growing hungry, loyal and passionate fanbase , which includes a surprisingly eclectic array of sports & media celebs including the BBC’s Mike Bushell, Josh Warrington, Guy Mowbray, Gaetano Berardi and Westlife’s Nicky Byrne to name but a few.

So Darkness Falls is it any good ? Well in my opinion it’s the best song they have written to date and that’s a bold statement when you consider their back catalogue.

The track has an almost acoustic feel to it as it kicks off and Rob’s vocals are as good as I have heard from Skylights, but it’s the gradual build up of sound and emotion that take Darkness Falls to a new level for the band. The guitar riffs that drive the track are outstanding, especially the occasional solo from Turnbull and the ending from Myles drums give the track a true finishing statement.

Lyrically and vocally it captures for me perfectly the times we are currently living in with corrupt politics and a global pandemic as Rob delivers a powerful and emotive vocal throughout combined with lines such as “people watch and people stare, nobody stops and nobody cares” and “in this world of fear and hate, we stand up tall are we too late” really paint a picture of life today !!

Darkness Falls is going to an epic live song going forward as it will build up to a thrilling crescendo leaving the crowd demanding more.

In 2021 Skylights will embark on a tour (some dates already sold out) which will see them play Leeds Uni,  Aberdeen, Glasgow, London and Dublin, as well as Live At Leeds, Hit the North, Sound City and Bingley Weekender.  Don’t miss out these guys are going to be huge, they write great tracks and emotive songs and really are a must see. See you in Glasgow.
