Columbia - Fat Catz

Formed in late 2017, Columbia are a Scouse five piece rock’n’roll band.

After being hailed as one of Merseyside’s next top bands the band have toured the UK alongside supporting big names like, The Sherlocks, Kyle Falconer (The View) and Jamie Webster.

They released their latest single Fat Catz on Friday 23 October, it was recorded with Jose Ibanez at 3rd Planet Recording Studios.

When asked about the track guitarist Jay says:

We wanted to write a song that was punky and in your face. We put together some power chords and jammed with it for a while and then Jonny came in with the lyrics for the song. We all loved dance music before forming the band, so we wanted to add some dance type ideas into the guitar solo instead of going traditional with it. It’s ended up being an exciting new tune that has both 90’s punk vibes and modern dance hooks running through it.

Fat Catz is introduced to us by a pounding drum beat and a single guitar riff that really sets a tone that engages the listener from the off.

The song encapsulates the Scouse accent with its strong vocal and the band take us on a journey telling the story of a working class life where you work hard to party hard at the weekend (well maybe that will happen again in the future).

The track brings out a slightly different sound for the band with its power drums and huge guitar melodies it gives Fat Catz a real punky vibe.

They have also managed to write an ear worm of the chorus with the lyrics “I tell them that I’m OK they tell me that my head is doing overtime, I tell them that I’m OK baby I feel good and I’m feeling fine”, these will definitely be belted back at them when this is played live.

Although it’s been difficult for artists during recent months Columbia have used the time to write and record new music and with Fat Catz they are showing real progression in their songwriting. The band are set to head out on another UK tour next year alongside releasing their debut EP, which I am going to be looking forward to hearing based on the evidence of the latest release.
