The Brit Awards 2020 - My Predictions
Well I know what I’m watching tonight, the 40th anniversary of the Brit Awards. It will be brought to you from London’s 02 Arena live on ITV at 8pm or you can tune into the red carpet arrivals on ITV2 from 7pm.
Now although this is the biggest night in the British music industry, you have to take with a pinch of salt if it is actually rewarding the most talented musicians. There is again a huge disparity in the gender balance of the nominees, with very little female representation in the main categories of Best album, Best song, Best British group and Best new artist, and there are many arguments for why this is the case, but we will leave them for another time, as the criteria of the Brits is purely based on chart success, and that the Brits only nominate artists who have enjoyed Top 40 success.
In fact when they announced the nominations, the Brits pre-empted any criticism by saying in a press release: “The eligibility list has been compiled by the Official Charts Company and includes artists who have released product and enjoyed top 40 chart success”
So let’s watch it tonight knowing that the awards are based on commercial success rather than necessarily the most talented, albeit the nominees are all talented artists.
To make the viewing more fun I have listed all the awards below, I have highlighted who I predict will win the award in BOLD, not necessarily who I think should win it, I have asterisked * the artists I think should win. Let’s see how my predictions turn out. I know I have got one right with Celeste in the Rising star award as that has already been announced.
